Brooklyn Defective Safety Equipment Lawyer

Manhattan Faulty Safety Harness Attorney

What Happens When Safety Equipment Fails?

An accident or emergency situation is a very dangerous situation. And if the safety equipment we rely on during these situations does not work, injuries can become even worse. Defective safety equipment can affect workers, firefighters and civilians with serious injuries such as burns, electrocution, asphyxiation, broken bones and even death.

If you have been injured by defective safety equipment, I can help. I am attorney David DeToffol and I represent injured clients in New York City. Because I have a background as a mechanical engineer, I understand the technical elements of equipment failure. Please call my office at 212-962-2220 for a free consultation.

Workers and Defective Safety Equipment

Construction workers are at an increased risk for injury because of the tools they use and the elevated heights of many job sites. Falls from ladders and scaffolding are very common, especially if guardrails and harnesses are not in place or not working properly. If there are no safety guards on equipment or if a power supply is not grounded, workers can also be injured or killed.

Defective safety equipment can be a problem for firefighters, too. They also need harnesses to protect them from falls. Their personal protective equipment, such as helmets, fire-protective clothing and breathing apparatus, must all function properly to be effective. Firefighters are sometimes injured or killed by malfunctioning fire trucks or when struck by a vehicle at the scene of a fire.

Building Defects

Anyone in a building that has defective safety equipment is also at risk for injury. Fires can spread faster if there are faulty fire alarms or sprinklers, or if there are broken or missing fire extinguishers. Negligent security issues can also cause injury, including:

  • Poor or broken lighting
  • Unlit exit signs
  • Faulty locks
  • Broken communication systems
